So just got back my passport with visas for Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, which means I will be able to make it at least to Kirgistan.... Kasachstan and Russia visas will need to be obtained on the way.... But for now the trip can go ahead...

Turkey has a real border making clear that you are leaving the EC countries. Sneaking by the line of trucks there was, however, no major issue or wait. The highway is a bit rough at first but the way towards Istanbul is well used and maintained overall....
